Measurement Guidance

Measuring Guide

Getting your measurements right is the most important step to finding a Qipao that fits beautifully. Follow this guide carefully before selecting your size or placing a custom order.

Important Notes

Ready-to-Wear Items

  • Measure yourself and compare your measurements with the size chart on each product page to find your best fit.
  • All size charts on our product pages show garment measurements, not body measurements. Choose approximately 0.5" larger than your actual body measurements for ease of movement.

Custom Orders

  • For custom orders, please provide your body measurements — we will add the appropriate ease allowance.
  • Wear the bra and shoes you plan to wear with the dress when taking measurements.
  • We strongly recommend having your measurements taken by a professional tailor.
  • Measure 2–3 times to ensure accuracy. Record measurements in centimeters where possible.

Please also provide: your height, weight, and shoe heel height (for floor-length or fishtail styles).

How to Measure

Beth and Brian Qipao measuring guide overview

1. Bust

Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level all the way around your back. If you plan to wear a bra with the dress, wear it while measuring.

2. Waist

Measure around your natural waistline — find it by bending gently to one side and noting where your torso creases. If needed, also measure around your lower abdomen and include that measurement in your notes.

3. Hips / Seat

Stand with feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.

4. Qipao Length (Shoulder to Hem)

Stand upright and measure from the midpoint of your shoulder, over the fullest part of your bust, straight down to where you would like the hem to end.

For floor-length or fishtail styles: measure from the midpoint of your shoulder over the fullest part of your bust all the way down to the floor. Please also provide your shoe heel height so we can adjust the length accordingly.

5. Shoulder Width

If you lift up your arms, where your shoulder joint indents are where the measurement should start. Measure from one shoulder joint to the other across the back. Alternatively, wear a well-fitted T-shirt and measure from shoulder seam to shoulder seam.

6. Shoulder to Apex

Measure from the midpoint of your shoulder straight down to the center of your bust (the apex / nipple point).

7. Apex to Apex

Measure the horizontal distance between your two apex points (nipple to nipple), keeping the tape parallel to the floor.

8. Shoulder to Waist

Sizing Guide

Getting the right size is the most important step to a Qipao that fits and feels beautiful. Please read this guide carefully before ordering — Chinese sizing works a little differently from standard Western sizing.

Key Sizing Rules

  • Always check the size chart on each product page. Different designs and fabrics are cut differently — there is no universal size across our range.
  • Size charts show garment measurements, not body measurements. Add 2–3 cm to your body measurements for a comfortable fit, or 3–5+ cm for a looser fit.
  • Chinese sizing runs smaller than US/European sizing. Please do not assume your usual Western size will apply.
  • If your bust or hips fall at the upper end of a size range, choose the next size up.
  • If you are between two sizes, always choose the larger size.

Not sure which size to choose? Email us at support@bethandbrianqipao.com — we’re happy to help you find the right fit.

I. How to Measure Yourself

Use a soft measuring tape to take your body measurements. Measure in centimeters for best accuracy and compare to the size chart on each individual product page.

Maintenance Tips

Here are Some tips for taking care of your beautiful Qipao dresses.

For Regular Qipao dresses :
If you don’t have time to hand-wash your regular suede fabric, composite lace, velvet, satin, or artificial tea silk Qipao dresses,  then please place the regular Qipao into a thick mesh bag ( wash bag) before putting it in a washer. Please make sure the water is tap cold/cold then choose light wash. Finally, please air dry it.

For mulberry silk Qipao dresses :
1)  Mulberry silk can’t be washed with soap, washing powder, or liquid detergent. Silk will fade when it encounters alkaline chemicals. Avoid soaking. Never use a hard brush or vigorously rub.  It is recommended to use shower gel and cold water to hand-wash and rub gently. It is recommended to air dry.

2) It is okay to dry-clean mulberry silk qipao too.

For Cotton or Linen Qipao dresses / Tang suits:
1)  If you don’t have time to hand-wash your cotton and linen Qipao or Tang suits,  please place them into thick mesh bags ( wash bags ) before putting them in a washer. Using tap cold/cold water to wash cotton and linen material items is highly recommended. Avoid prolonged soaking. Never use a hard brush or vigorously rub. Use bleach-free detergent to avoid fading.  It is recommended to air dry.

2) It is okay to dry-clean cotton and linen qipao too.

Finally, please divide the qipao into deep and light colors and wash it separately.
